A typeface sets the mood of a page like a soundtrack to a movie. Typesetting as we know it has been around since the late 15th century. At The Artisan Press your type can be created from either digital art onto a special printing block or can be typeset using the original hot metal casting method from a Ludlow Typecaster.

In the digital age some fonts do lend themselves better to letterpress than others and keep in mind some of today's typefaces are designed purely for reading off a computer screen. Keep in mind that having access to 2000 digital fonts doesn't mean you should use them all!

If you'd like hot metal typecasting please be aware that you are restricted to the 70 typefaces held in stock.

Traditional typesetting is based on the old belief that type should be seen and not heard. Clean and simple layout that conveys your message with class and understatement. Adorned with a simple illustration or a text flourish, the traditional approach is still popular because it works very well.

Modern typesetting challenges both the eye and mind. Adventurous layout that conveys your message with colour and movement.
